VERDICT OF THE RODE VIDEOMIC

This mic’s quality is amazing for its price—it’s such a bang for your buck! It even comes with a windshield, helix mount, and SC14 cord, so you’re all set right out of the box. The Rode is perfect for beginners on a budget who still want top-notch sound. The sound is super clear and crisp, making it a solid choice whether you’re recording vocals, podcasts, or even videos!

ADVANTAGES OF THE RODE VIDEOMIC

CHEAP

If you keep up with me for some time now, then you know how much I like buying cheap and inexpensive camera equipment, while having great built in quality and amazing outcomes!

money

This bad boy is coming in hot from Amazon.com only for $99, but I most assured you that buying it used is a GREAT investment as well. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND! It works great and it does the job. While B&H is selling it for $79 (not used) - that’s a bang for your buck!

Or you can go a different route and buy it from eBay that is coming in… super hot with only $58.99. I have it linked below and don’t worry these are not affiliated links!

ULTRA-COMPACT & LIGHTWEIGHT

My camera is heavy as it is and I do not need anything, even heavier on top of it. Well todays a great day because I am here to tell you that this microphone is SUPER DUPER LIGHTWEIGHT.

compact mic

I do not feel a difference in weight with my camera, when I attach it on. According to rode.com it weighs 33 grams, that is not even a pound! It’s perfect for wherever you go and fits in such small spaces. It lives up to its name “ultra-compact” microphone.

VERY DIVERSE

What do I mean about diverse? This mic not only works for your camera but you can also use it on your iPhone, laptop, ipad, you name it! The mic has a USB-C on the side of it and a TRS-output for DSLRs.

You can simply use your latest port C iPhone charger cord, or you can buy an affordable adapter that plugs into your laptop or computer if you have different outputs!

Below are the links to videos that are super helpful, straight to the point and affordable options for different ways to use the Rode mic at your convenience.

CLEAR AND CONCISE

This microphone is amazing, the video output of the sound, sounds like you’re listening to a podcast. It is built in with a helix for isolation, therefore all the knocks, bumps, and rumbles within a room are not heard when recording your voice overs or podcast.

podcast

It uses the same great technology as the popular VideoMic NTG and NTG5 - (which are a lot more expensive)- giving you clear, full sound that improves the audio on your camera.

Its directional design picks up sound directly in front while reducing noise from the sides and back. Even from farther away, it keeps the audio clean and clear, making your recordings sound better every time.

COOL FEATURES

  • No batteries needed nor to be charged

  • Level peaking LED light next to the USB-C output: when you see this flashing, it simply means that your levels are peaking and your audio will be distorted in post.

  • Comes with a high quality wind-shield

  • Comes with a 3.5mm Tip-Ring Sleeve output

  • Cable management slot on top of the sliding rail to better organize your wires and cords

  • A sliding rail that slides right into your cameras cold shoe mount

DRAWBACKS

Noise Isn’t Its Friend

Loud protestors

In loud environments, it tends to pick up background sounds, which could get in the way of a clean recording.

Cord is Short and Sweet

short cord

The included cable gets the job done for close setups, but you’ll need an upgrade if distance is part of your plan.

Laser-Focused Pickup

As mentioned this mic is directional so it locks in on what’s directly in front, which is great for isolating sound—but forget capturing anything happening off to the sides. Hence this would be best to capture ambience of the room or event.
